Guano carries infectious bacteria, allergens, and pathogens. It's carcinogenic, depletes the immune system, and creates slip and trip hazards on access points, steps, and working platforms. On an offshore asset these risks are amplified - personnel transfers are already high-risk, and a contaminated landing zone raises that risk significantly.
Asset Damage
Guano is highly acidic. Prolonged exposure causes surface corrosion on turbine components, platforms, and equipment. Birds nesting or resting on assets also damage cables and infrastructure. The cost isn't just cleaning - it's accelerated asset degradation that compounds over time.
Operational Delays
When guano contaminates a working area, work stops. Specialist cleaning contractors must be mobilised - requiring up to 48 hours' advance notice for permits, and unable to work in sea states above 1.5m. Vessels, crew, and technicians stand down at thousands of pounds per day. Guano can return overnight, meaning the same area may need cleaning again the following morning.
Why Existing Solutions Fail
Most bird deterrent products on the market were not designed for offshore use. Static deterrents lose effectiveness quickly as birds habituate to them.
